Our 2003 Annual Meeting was held on November 21st through 23rd at
CHICAGOPEX in Arlington Heights,
Illinois. Also holding annual meetings
at CHICAGOPEX were the British Caribbean Philatelic Study Group and the
United Postal Stationery Society.
On Friday evening about 40 USSS members and guests gathered at a nearby
Chinese restaurant for a Dutch treat dinner and stamp fellowship. The
next day after lunch, our annual USSS Membership Meeting was held. This
was followed by meetings of the Prexie Committee and the
Washington-Franklin Committee.
On the exhibit floor our members did very well. Although a Barbados
exhibit won the Grand Award, member Peter G. DuPuy won the Reserve Grand
Award for United States with his exhibit "30¢ and 90¢ Denominations of
the U.S. 1861 Issue" and member Ross A. Towle won the Reserve Grand
Award for Foreign with his exhibit "Chile Postal Cards and Envelopes
1872-1929."
In addition to these awards, The United States Stamp Society's Southgate
Award for best U.S. 19th Century exhibit by a USSS member went to Robert
D. Hohertz for his exhibit "Revenue Stamped Paper of the Spanish
American War Tax Era." The Hopkinson
Award for best U.S. 20th Century
exhibit by a USSS member went to Robert A. Schlesinger for his exhibit
"The 1938 Presidential Issue - A Rate Study." The Statue of Freedom
Medal for best exhibit of U.S. material went to Peter G. DuPuy for his
exhibit "30¢ and 90¢ Denominations of the U.S. 1861 Issue."
Overall, USSS members won a total of five Golds, six Vermeils and three
Silvers in the multi-frame exhibit competition and one Gold and two
Vermeils in the single frame competition. In the literature
competition, our monthly journal, The United States Specialist, won a
Vermeil, while our latest publication, A
Glossary of Terms for the
Collector of United States Stamps, won a Silver medal.
