2007 Annual Board Meeting Committee Report

This report reflects the activity from January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2006:

Awards sent in 2006: 24 gold Statue of Freedom medals and 25 silver President's Award medals.  The fewer number of golds reflect the fact that several WPS shows were not held because of Washington 2006.

Other projects: A Hopkinson Literature Award plaque was procured and presented at Washington.  We also purchased a Remington bronze that was one of the special awards for Washington 2006.

2006 Annual Board Meeting Committee Report

In 2005, we provided 30 Statue of Freedom gold medals to WSP shows and 24 silver President's Awards to local and regional shows.

I have compiled a complete list of past Hopkinson and Southgate winners, both exhibitor and exhibit title, based on available information.  This should make it easier in future years to determine who is eligible.  We will write updated criteria sheets for the Statue of Freedom and President's Awards after all of the "kinks" are worked out at the Annual Meeting.  New criteria sheets for the Hopkinson and Southgate Awards as well as an instruction sheet for the judges for the annual show were written.

2005 Annual Board Meeting Committee Report

In 2004, we provided 30 Statue of Freedom gold medals to WSP shows and 19 silver President's Awards to local and regional shows.

Other tasks completed this year are:

After a review of Specialist back issues and years of palmares, the "definitive" lists of winners of the Hopkinson Literature award and the Hopkinson and Southgate Exhibiting awards have been compiled.

The new criteria for all awards given by the Society have been written and approved.

A supply of silver President's Award medals was procured.

A Remington Bronze was purchased on behalf of the USSS and has been donated to the Washington 2006 committee.  It is expected that it will be used for one of the major awards.  An article and picture have been sent to The Specialist for publication (see July issue, p. 293).

2004 Annual Board Meeting Committee Report

This report reflects the activity from January 1, 2004 through May 7, 2004.  Inventory on hand as of May 7th: 111 gold Statue of Freedom medals and 110 silver President's Award medals.  This reflects the recent purchase of 100 gold medals for a price of $5.25 each including presentation boxes, shipping and taxes.

Projected purchases between now and the next annual meeting will be the usual office supplies and postage, as well as the Hopkinson and Southgate awards for the 2005 meeting.  This year we are using the "left-over" Hopkinson forwarded to me by Kirk Nichols and I have purchased the Southgate award.  I would like to have input on whether we wish to continue with the trays in the future or look at some alternatives.  This year's Southgate Award is a 12" tray that cost $25 (engraving included).  A match for the Hopkinson Award (14") could not be found and any 14" tray would have to have been ordered: there was not enough lead-time this year to do this.  I personally think the smaller tray might be a better alternative anyway.  I can look into bulk purchases if there is a price break available once we have decided on what award we want to use.

Awards sent so far this year: 17 gold Statue of Freedom medals have been sent to WSP shows to date; this is for shows through July.  I have sent 14 silver President's awards so far this year; some of these shows will take place as late as September.  I fill these requests as they come in.  I have also offered it to many shows that did not know about it when they were requesting the AAPE pins. Most have accepted.  I think that we have sufficient medals to last until Washington 2006 and probably a bit beyond.

Other projects: I will be attempting to compile a complete list of past Hopkinson and Southgate winners, both exhibitor and exhibit title.  This should make it easier in future years to determine who is eligible.  We have written new criteria for the Statue of Freedom and President's Awards that are being sent to the shows.  I am also preparing a new criteria sheet for the Hopkinson and Southgate Awards as well as an instruction sheet for the judges for the Annual Meeting show, as well as a guideline document regarding the duties of the awards chairperson.
