The George W. Brett Century of Service Award honors a member for outstanding
service to the Society. The award was established by the Board at the
Annual Meeting held on May 15th, 1999 at ROMPEX.
Nominations must be received in writing by the Board at least 60 days prior to
the Annual Meeting. Only one nominee can be selected in any one year by majority
vote of the Board. The recipient must be a member in good standing for at least 10
years. The award need not be voted on or presented every year.

USSS Secretary Joann Lenz has been awarded the USSS George W. Brett Century of Service Award. The Award was presented at the General Membership Meeting held at St. Louis Stamp Expo, February 28, 2009. The text of the citation accompanying the Award reads:
This award honors Joann Lenz for her extraordinary dedication to United States Stamp Society.
Joann Lenz, a collector of United States stamps and postal history, has done ground-breaking research covering a variety of unusual philatelic topics. Prominent among her varied collections is Plate Number Coils. Within two years of joining the Society she chaired the BIA Plate Number Coils committee.
In 1995 Joann was elected to the Board of Governors. She was elected Secretary to the Board and has served the Society in that capacity continuously for thirteen years. In addition to activities with the USSS and the Plate Number Coil Collectors Club, Joann’s service to philately has expanded to the American Philatelic Society when, in 2007, she was elected Director-at-Large.
Joann’s philatelic research is reflected in her exhibits that have been awarded Gold and Grand awards in national competition. Joann is a proponent and researcher of modern philatelic studies and she generously shares her eclectic interests, research and discoveries with fellow collectors via her website.
Joann Lenz’s philatelic research and service brings honor to the Society worthy of special recognition.

The Board of Governors awarded Wallace Cleland, #6470, the
Century of Service award at the 80th Anniversary banquet held
at the National Postal Museum, May 30, 2006. The award,
recently named in honor of George W. Brett, is given to a
member for outstanding service to the Society.
The citation read at the presentation ceremony stated:
This award honors Wallace Cleland for his extraordinary
dedication to United States Stamp Society.
Since the earliest day of his membership in 1966, he has been
a leader in the research and study of plate numbers and plate
markings. For forty years Wallace has been one of the most
prolific contributors to The United States Specialist on a
wide variety of topics from plate numbers and markings, coil
production, production of the Series of 1922 to the
Washington Franklin Series Coil Waste Issue. He is notably
recognized for original research on revenue stamps and
revenue plate markings.
Wallace Cleland served as Chairman of the Plate Number Check
List Service for many years, and in 1989 he was elected to
the Board of Governors. In 1992, Wallace was elected to the
Chairmanship of the Board of Governors and in August of that
year also served the Society as its twelfth President through
the remainder of that year. He served with distinction as the
Society's Board Chairman though 1997, continuing his
contribution to plate number studies.
Wallace Cleland is a two time recipient of the Society's
highest award for research published in The United States
Specialist, having garnered the Hopkinson Memorial Literature
Award in 1986 and 2002. He was also co-editor of the 2005
edition of the Durland Standard Plate Number Catalog, one of
the Society's most important contributions to philately.
The Board of Governors recognizes member number 6470, Wallace
Cleland, as the recipient of the United States Stamp
Society's Century of Service Award.

The Board of Governors awarded Barbara R. Mueller the Century of Service award
at the Society's Annual Meeting in CHICAGOPEX 2003 held at Chicago, November
22, 2003. The following citation was read at the presentation ceremony:
This award honors Barbara Mueller for her remarkable dedication to philately
and the United States Stamp Society. She is the author of three books: Common
Sense Philately, United States Postage Stamps and Postage Stamps and
Christianity as well as numerous articles on a diversity of philatelic subjects
from design and art to postal markings and the U.S. registry system. Barbara
has chaired several Society committees including the Postal History and
Markings Committee and the Essays-Proof Committee. Barbara also served as the
Editor of The United States Specialist from 1972 through 1977 and has been a
prolific contributor to that journal for over seven decades. In her "Three
Score and Ten Years of the BIA - A Remembrance," a series of articles
celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the BIA/USSS, she profoundly stated "we can
appreciate what has been done and gain guidance for what still lies
ahead." Barbara also has served as editor of the The Essay-Proof
Journal and Paper Money.
Barbara Mueller has been a valued contributor to the Society and is
unquestionably one of the most important philatelic researchers and writers of
the 20th Century. She was the recipient of the APS John N. Luff Award in 1956
and signed the APS Scroll of Distinguished Recipients of that award in 1973.
Barbara is recognized in the APS Writers Unit 30 Hall of Fame.
The Board of Governors recognizes member number 1790, Barbara R. Mueller, as
the recipient of the United States Stamp Society's Century of Service Award.

The Board of Governors awarded William O. Schuman the Century of Service
Award at the 70th Anniversary banquet held at the National Postal
Museum, June 2, 2000.
The following citation was read at the presentation ceremony:
This award honors a member of the USSS/BIA for his remarkable dedication
to the Society. Through his philatelic interests he has been an
energetic promoter of our motto "Know Your Country's Stamps." A member
for over four decades, he served as Governor and was our President from
1980 through 1985. Under his leadership our Society was greatly
strengthened and expanded into the organization now celebrating its 70th
Anniversary. For the past 20 years he has volunteered his time and
resources in support of our book publication program. He has provided
efficient and cost effective inventorying and processing which has
enabled us to publish the best in U.S. stamp research at an affordable
price. An award winning exhibitor and collector willing to share his
knowledge and research material, he represents the finest example of the
goals of the Society. The Board of Governors wishes to recognize the
recipient of the Bureau Issues Association Century of Service Award for
2000, William O. Schuman.

This award honors a member of the BIA for his remarkable dedication to the
Association. He has demonstrated unselfish and continuous service towards
promoting the goals of the BIA. He has been a spokesman and promoter of our
motto "Know Your Country's Stamps." For over twenty years he has patiently
encouraged collectors to expand their knowledge of United States stamps by
introducing them to our published research and studies. He is unquestionably
recognized as the organization's number one recruiter. The Board of
Governors wishes to recognize the first recipient of the Bureau Issues
Association Century of Service Award, James D. Galceran.
The award takes the form of a silver ingot weighing 50 ounces with the
engraved legend:
