2007 Annual Board Meeting Committee Report

Another good year for the Liberty Series!

The Liberty Series Yahoo! discussion group has grown to currently 40 members.  Much discussion and information is readily available from this group for collectors wishing to learn more about this series of stamps.  Collectors with an interest in the Liberty Series can join at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/liberty_series/.

A new EDU for the 3¢ dry printing sheet stamp was reported.  The current EDU is September 11, 1956, reported by Roland Austin.  Ron Blanks presented his initial EDU report on the dry printings of the series, giving collectors a starting point to search for earlier dates.

The new Liberty Series book by Ken Lawrence, Tony Wawrukiewicz and David Eeles will be released this year, sparking new interest and growth in collecting the series.

The Liberty Series was represented last year at stamp shows by no fewer than four exhibits.

Tony Wawrukiewicz continues to write about Liberty covers in his Linn's column, "Modern Postal History."

The Liberty Series web site is entering its eleventh year on the internet. It houses some past Liberty articles and postal history.  It is located at: http://members.aol.com/raustin13/studygrp/liberty.htm

2006 Annual Board Meeting Committee Report

This has been a very busy year for the Liberty Series!  A Liberty Series Yahoo! discussion group was created to replace the printed newsletter.  Currently, 33 members participate.  Much discussion and information is readily available from this group for collectors wishing to learn more about this series of stamps.  Collectors with an interest in the Liberty Series can join at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/liberty_series/.

Extensive discussion about the 3¢ dry printing sheet stamp has revealed the current EDU of October 19, 1956.  Ron Blanks is researching dry printings on cover.

Tony Wawrukiewicz continues to write about Liberty covers in his Linn's column, "Modern Postal History."

Two important Liberty usages were discovered this year and will be reported in The Specialist.  Both concern the tagged 4¢ Lincoln sheet stamp.  The first solo example on a postcard usage was discovered in March; then in April, the first reported solo usage on an unsealed third-class Christmas card envelope was discovered.  It has taken over 42 years for these discovery examples to come to light.

David Eeles was honored with his Gold medal 3¢ Liberty exhibit being accepted for Washington 2006.

Tony Wawrukiewicz won the 2005 SESCAL Grand with his exhibit, "Usages of the 1954 Liberty Series." It will compete in the Champion of Champions at StampShow 2006.

The Liberty Series will be well represented in the frames at StampShow 2006.  Besides Tony's exhibit, Joann Lenz will exhibit her single-frame showing of the 6¢ Roosevelt.  Also, Roland Austin will exhibit his 10-frame "Postal History of the 1954 Liberty Series," which will be the first time an exhibit shows four of the most desirable uses of the Liberty Series:

  • LOOK tagged 3¢ coil envelope postmarked from Des Moines (two different covers, the only examples known in collector hands);

  • The only 2¢ Silkote Christmas card rate usage known in collector hands;

  • One of four known commercial uses of the 4½¢ coil;

  • And a contemporary, commercial usage of the $5.00 Hamilton on full cover (discovery example).

We celebrate 10 years on the internet with our Liberty Series web site, which houses some past Liberty articles and postal history.  It is still located at: http://liberty.usstamps.org/.

2005 Annual Board Meeting Committee Report

The 1954 Liberty Series Committee has 81 members who communicate via the Committee's website, phone and email.  The website's address is http://liberty.usstamps.org/.

Recent publications include an update on precanceled Franklins on LOOK usages by Roland Austin that appeared in the June, 2005 Specialist.

2003 Annual Board Meeting Committee Report

Committee membership consists of over 100 collectors who have expressed an interest in the Sixth Bureau issue.  The big news this year has been the discovery by Ken Lawrence of the wet-printed, small-hole, white gum variety of the 3¢ Liberty coil.  Other than that, the past year has been relatively quiet, compared to the previous two.  Committee members continue to exhibit and win top awards.

Our print newsletter, the TORCH, has been suspended, making the Liberty Series website our primary contact with committee members.  Using the website gives us almost immediate reporting.  However, if any member would like to assume editorship of the print newsletter, let the chairman know your ideas on the direction you will take it.

2001 Annual Board Meeting Committee Report

The last year was rather uneventful as far as Committee activity goes.  A lot of the new findings were reported in the mass philatelic press before we could make use of them in our newsletter.  It seems that Liberty news is now BIG news for these publications.  We take this to be good, as it is further testament to how increasingly popular the Liberty Series has become.

A few members are proceeding with producing a compilation of possible solo usages of each Liberty value (similar to what the Prexie Committee is currently doing in The Specialist).  This has been a work in progress over the last two years.  A lot of the data is at hand, but finding covers for illustrations in member collections may cause delay.

Bill Dunn is in the process of gathering data on color shades of the 7¢ value as well as continuing communication with Scott concerning catalog listings and pricing.

Our website continues to draw praise on the internet.  Covers continue to be added.  The URL is: http://members.aol.com/raustinl3/studygrp/liberty.htm.
