2000 Annual Board Meeting Committee Report

The Modern Postal History Committee has been a one man show for the past several years.  A five year project identifying the POSTNET barcodes for international addresses was finally successful despite the lack of any reports from the United States Postal Service.  This lead to a major paper in the United Kingdom:

Quine, DB, 1998a. "Intentional USPS POSTNET Barcodes On International Mail," IDENT: Journal of the Postal Mechanisation Study Circle, 21 (4), pp. 56-68.

The plethora of false markings on envelopes implying service levels or government endorsements led to a short note in a domestic philatelic newspaper:

Quine, DB, 1998b. "Cover Has Special Delivery Disguise," Linn's Stamp News, November 30, 1998, p. 2.

An article was written to update the BIA/USSS membership about the Modern Postal History Committee and some of the available resources:

Quine, DB, 1999. "Modern Postal History Update: Barcodes and Resources," The United States Specialist, Vol. 70, No. 10 (October, 1999), pp. 474-475.

Finally, an article was written about the advent of computer printed postage including Postal Buddy and Autopost as well as the new PC Postage (Internet Postage Meters) systems:

Quine, DB, 2000. "PC Postage Meter Launch at National Postal Forum, Chicago, Illinois", IDENT: Journal of the Postal Mechznisation Study Circle, 23 (1), pp. 13-16.

I support ongoing Internet Web Pages with USPS acronym glossaries: [http://www.triskelion-ltd.com/uspsglos.html] and POSTNET barcode decoders [http://www.triskelion-ltd.com/postnetj.html] which have received 18,014 hits in the past four years.  These sites also list links to lists of my philatelic publications, research, and published letters with a total of 4,265 hits to date.

I encourage USSS members with interests in Modern Postal History to submit articles and take advantage of the expertise of the society members to further their research interests.
