Literature Award James H. Patterson of Phoenix, Arizona has been given the special distinction of being chosen as the winner of the Bureau Issues Association's Walter W. Hopkinson Literature Award for 1998. Jim authored the 16-page article "Small Die Proofs of the 20th Century's Second Quarter" in our June, 1998 edition of The United States Specialist. He provided our membership new, fresh, well-documented research for the benefit of all our journal readers. Jim joins distinguished company from a long tradition of fine philatelic researchers, namely, Gary Griffith, Kenneth Diehl and Brian Baba, all previous award winners of the Hopkinson Literature Award, whom I had chosen to review and judge every contribution printed in our fine philatelic publication. These three gentlemen are thanked for their time and selection. Please congratulate Jim for his superb contribution. - Mark Alan, President |

Back Issues of The Specialist The BIA will no longer store and sell back issues of The U.S. Specialist. Beginning 1 January 2000, only back issues for the previous 12 months will be available for purchase from the Executive Secretary. Your society will no longer have access to storage and processing facilities. For many years your society had the generous support and use of storage facilities from a volunteer member who provided this service at cost. However, times have changed and we must move on. Photocopying services for a fee of $2.00 per issue, postpaid, will become available in the near future for back issues. Watch your journal for an announcement. Should you wish to purchase back issues of The Specialist, send in your order immediately. Copies are $2.00 each, postpaid. Issues are available for the years 1939, 1944 to 1998. Most years have several copies; but, some months of a given year do not have any. Hence, you MUST list alternates with your order; the more issues you wish to purchase, the more alternates you should list. Send your order to the Executive Secretary, P.O. Box 2641, Reston, VA 20195. |

Contributions from Members to be Recognized Each year many members make generous (and tax deductible) contributions to the Bureau Issues Association. These contributions are an important part of the annual budget and have helped to stabilize our dues structure, even though the costs of printing and mailing The Specialist have increased over the years. Beginning with contributions made after October 1, 1999, we will recognize these contributions by publishing a list of contributors in The Specialist. Any member preferring not to have the member’s name listed as a contributor in The Specialist, please write "Anonymous" on the dues/contribution slip. |

BIA Research Paper #2 Supplements Since its initial publication in 1993, the BIA’s Folded Style Booklet Checklist has been re-issued in twelve editions. The 12th edition was released in May, 1997, at Pacific ’97, and four sets of supplemental pages were issued between then and December, 1998. A new set of supplemental pages is now available for purchase. There have been many new booklets and convertible booklets issued during the last year, and this supplement includes everything from December, 1998 to November, 1999. Members who own a copy of the 12th edition of Research Paper #2 and who have kept it updated with the previous sets of supplements should consider buying this set so they can have the most current information available. There are twelve double-sided pages in this supplement and the cost is $3.00 postpaid, mailed flat to addresses in the USA. If you need to replace your old copy of Research Paper #2, we have updated the remaining copies of the 12th edition to contain all five sets of supplemental pages. The complete Research Paper #2 is available for $12.00 postpaid, mailed flat to addresses in the USA. The complete checklist contains 48 double-sided pages and covers booklets issued from 1977 to date. The listings include all plate number combinations and marginal markings that can be found on the booklet panes. That information is presented in the form of tables, allowing the user easily to keep track of the varieties they have or are looking for. In addition, plate layout drawings are included for many of the booklet issues. This catalog is a must for any serious booklet collector. To order either the supplement or the complete updated checklists, send a check or money order (payable to the Bureau Issues Association) to: David Eeles, P. O. Box 933, Columbus, OH 43216-0933. |
