Why Advertise in The United States Specialist
The Authoritative Journal
The United States Specialist, published in full color, features important articles on United States philately by recognized specialists and scholars. Many important discoveries in U.S. collecting have been published in its pages resulting in new listings in the Scott Specialized Catalogue of U.S. Stamps and Covers. Every issue of The Specialist remains a useful reference work for years to come.
Once concerned mainly with the output of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Specialist now covers all U.S. issues, both classic and modern, regardless of the printer, and is the world’s leading journal of modern U. S. philately.
The complete run of the journal is available to members to search and download on the Society’s website.
Every issue of The Specialist remains a useful reference work for years to come. The Specialist is also available as a bound volume at the end of every year. Both monthly issues and bound volumes of past years have been in strong demand in the philatelic literature market.

National Postal Museum – USSS Research Funding
The United States Stamp Society has partnered with the Smithsonian National Postal Museum to support scholarly research through the creation of a research funding project.
The NPM – USSS Research Fund was created for scholarly research of United States postage and/or revenue stamps or postal history leading to publication. Funding will consist of a five year commitment of $2,500 per year. The program will be administered by the Smithsonian National Postal Museum. Applications for funding will be reviewed by an Awards Committee, responsible for selecting the awardee. The committee will be comprised of two members of the USSS and the NPM Winton M. Blount Chair in Research. The researcher’s final product (article, presentation, web exhibit, etc.), to be defined by the USSS, will be reviewed by NPM and the USSS. The USSS will have the first right of refusal for publishing the work in The United States Specialist and/or on our website.
The NPM will be accepting applications on a rolling basis throughout the calendar year..
We encourage Society members to consider taking advantage of this opportunity to engage in research utilizing the resources of the National Postal Museum. Additional information and scholarship applications may be found on the NPM website at:

2009 – Joann Lenz Receives The George W. Brett Century of Service Award
USSS Secretary Joann Lenz has been awarded the USSS George W. Brett Century of Service Award. The Award was presented at the General Membership Meeting held at St. Louis Stamp Expo, February 28, 2009. The text of the citation accompanying the Award reads:
This award honors Joann Lenz for her extraordinary dedication to United States Stamp Society.
Joann Lenz, a collector of United States stamps and postal history, has done ground-breaking research covering a variety of unusual philatelic topics. Prominent among her varied collections is Plate Number Coils. Within two years of joining the Society she chaired the BIA Plate Number Coils committee.
In 1995 Joann was elected to the Board of Governors. She was elected Secretary to the Board and has served the Society in that capacity continuously for thirteen years. In addition to activities with the USSS and the Plate Number Coil Collectors Club, Joann’s service to philately has expanded to the American Philatelic Society when, in 2007, she was elected Director-at-Large.
Joann’s philatelic research is reflected in her exhibits that have been awarded Gold and Grand awards in national competition. Joann is a proponent and researcher of modern philatelic studies and she generously shares her eclectic interests, research and discoveries with fellow collectors via her website.
Joann Lenz’s philatelic research and service brings honor to the Society worthy of special recognition.
The Board of Governors recognizes Joann Lenz for her extraordinary dedication to the USSS as the recipient of the George W. Brett Century of Service Award.
